What's Included

Our Linux Server Management Includes

Our 24/7 monitoring watches your Linux server and opens a ticket when something needs attention. You and your team can open a server ticket any time, for anything. We work the queue around the clock.

24/7 Server Monitoring

Constant monitoring of your Linux server — CPU, memory, disk, network, RAID array, outbound spam outbreaks, the kernel and systemd, and the response of every service: MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL where present, PHP, PHP-FPM, Apache, Nginx, LiteSpeed, Postfix, Exim, Dovecot, BIND, FTP, and SSH — plus whichever panel sits on top (cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, Virtualmin, or none). Custom website sanity checks, application probes, port and connection monitors added on request. Alerts land in our Linux server management queue, not on your phone.

24/7 Server Support

Unlimited 24/7/365 ticket support for anything on your Linux server. Blocked outbound email and SMTP bounces, IMAP and Dovecot connection issues, SSL and TLS certificate renewals, slow WordPress sites and wp-admin lockouts, DNS, SPF, DKIM, and CNAME changes, firewall and ModSecurity rule updates, cron failures, .htaccess and file permissions, malware scans, reboots, outages, and any system administration task you can describe in a ticket. Standard tickets respond in ten to thirty minutes, urgent in five to ten. No ticket limit, no hourly charges.

Linux Server Hardening

Advanced CSF firewall tuned to your Linux server traffic, with Login Failure Daemon blocking brute-force attempts on the panel (if any), FTP, SSH, and email. Linux socket monitor, Logwatch, Rootkit Hunter, and chkrootkit catch unauthorized processes and rootkits. ModSecurity and PHP hardening on request. SSL on every domain through Let’s Encrypt or your certificate of choice. SSH and DNS hardening, kernel patching, and secured /tmp + /var/tmp + /dev/shm. CloudLinux integration when your Linux server runs it. PCI compliance assistance for e-commerce servers.

Linux Server Setup

Full build of a new Linux server when you need one. Linux OS install, our hardening baseline, and configuration of the services you will host — including any of cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, or Virtualmin if you want a control panel, or a clean vanilla Linux stack. Let’s Encrypt deployed for valid SSL on every domain. Hostname plus forward and reverse DNS configured. DNS templates ready for every domain you add, with DKIM, SPF, and DMARC enabled on every mail domain. We migrate your existing websites, databases, and applications from the old server before the cutover.

Linux Server Migrations

Linux server migrations completed with the lowest possible downtime. Final fast-sync runs just before the cutover, then DNS flips. End users wake up on new Linux server hardware without a status-page incident. We migrate panel-to-panel, hardware-to-hardware, and bare-metal-to-cloud — AWS EC2 to DigitalOcean, or any source to any target. CentOS-to-AlmaLinux and CentOS-to-Rocky Linux distro migrations completed without losing customer data. Hostname, DNS, mail, and SSL certificates cut over cleanly.

Linux Server Backup

Backup is a separate Linux server backup service that we recommend for every Linux server. Seven daily and four weekly backups retained, with Backup Restoration to any server, monitored daily for failures. See Linux Server Backup.

Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery is the highest-priority work we do as part of your Linux Server Management. From server compromises and hard drive failures to accidentally deleted databases and user accounts, we work around the clock until your data is fully restored. Depending on severity we can often recover from a crashed drive or server-wide hack without a backup. Backup Restoration from any backup source you have — ours, the hosting provider’s snapshot, or whatever R1Soft or JetBackup left behind. Reboot, restore, and triage the moment the alert hits.

Linux Updates & Patching

Your Linux server’s OS patch level kept current. Kernel and core utility upgrades applied, reboots scheduled and notified. Security patches for major Linux outbreaks applied promptly. Major PHP upgrades done with rollback ready. MySQL and MariaDB version upgrades, including major-version migrations on InnoDB and MariaDB Galera cluster setups. CentOS-to-AlmaLinux and CentOS-to-Rocky Linux distro migrations performed without losing customer data.

Software Installation

OS-level software installs on your Linux server. Java and Tomcat for application servers. Apache, NginX, LiteSpeed, and PHP-FPM for the web stack. Varnish, Squid, and Solr for caching and search. MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL for databases. CloudLinux and CageFS for tenant isolation. BIND for DNS. WHMCS for billing. MagicSpam and MailScanner for mail flow. Git, OpenVPN, Cloudflare, and most third-party Linux software with an install guide.

Apache & NginX Optimization

Apache, Nginx, LiteSpeed, and PHP-FPM pool sizing for your traffic profile. MySQL & MariaDB Optimization — query tuning, memory buffers, thread cache, slow query log review. In-memory RAM disk for tmpdir; Memcached and REDIS as object caches. HTTP/2 enabled, mod_deflate and mod_gzip compression. Disk I/O bottleneck triage. Memory pressure root cause analysis. Relocation of MySQL data to SSD or NVMe when available.

Email & Mail Servers

Postfix or Exim configuration. Dovecot IMAP and POP3 tuning. Webmail (Roundcube) lockout fixes. SMTP relay setup. DNS records for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Spam control with SpamAssassin. Whitelist and blocklist management. Mail queue triage and bounce loop diagnosis. Mailbox quota issues. Blocked outbound email and IP delisting. The everyday email work that hosting companies forget to ask for until it breaks.

And Much More

Root work, account changes on whichever panel you run, DNS zone work, SSH access management, cron jobs, certificate installation and renewal, firewall rule changes, .htaccess and file permissions, log file analysis, WordPress and wp-admin recovery, the ten-minute things and the four-hour things.

Panel-Specific Management

Other Server Management Plans

Many of the Linux servers we manage run a control panel. Our dedicated pages for cPanel Server Management, Plesk Server Management, DirectAdmin Server Management, and Virtualmin Server Management walk through what is included for each — built on top of the same Linux Server Management work described above. We also manage vanilla Linux servers without a panel for hosting companies that prefer to roll their own stack. Same per-server price, same senior administrators handle every server.

We support every Linux server distribution hosting companies actually run: AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, and RHEL.

We work with any hosting provider, including AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, IBM Cloud, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, OVH, Vultr, and Linode, and with most cloud hosting technologies in common use.

Frequently Asked

Linux Server Management Quick FAQ

Looking for something else? Search our extensive FAQ here.

What happens after I signup?
You get a welcome email asking for root or admin access for the Linux server, the names of anyone authorized to open tickets with us, an emergency contact list, and your hosting provider login for cases that need a reboot or hardware fix. Once we have access, we set up our monitoring and management of your server. From there, we respond to monitoring alerts on your server and to any Linux server ticket you open.
Is my information kept secure?
Yes. Credentials and other sensitive data go into the encrypted fields of our ticketing portal. They are deleted from our system within 24 hours of the ticket being closed. Any login data we send back to you is also subject to that deletion. Our production system runs in our locked rack at the PhoenixNAP datacenter. You can change any of the passwords you give us once the initial setup is complete.
Is your support 24/7/365?
Yes. Has been since 2005. Crashed Linux servers are rebooted in under ten minutes. Urgent tickets are responded to in five to ten minutes.
What is the average ticket response time and average ticket resolution time?
Standard tickets respond inside ten to thirty minutes, often faster. Urgent tickets respond inside five to ten minutes. Resolution time depends on the issue.
How many years of experience do your technicians have?
Every system administrator who touches your Linux server has 8+ years managing production web hosting servers. Most have more.
How long have you been in business?
Since 2005.
Do you limit the hours of support per month a customer can use?
No. No ticket limits. No hourly buy-ins. No throttling.
Is there any fixed term contract?
No. Month-to-month.
What is your refund policy?
30-day money-back guarantee.
Are there any additional fees or setup charges?
No. $65 per Linux server. 20% discount at five servers or more. Quarterly, semi-annual, and annual prepay discounts on top. Unlimited tickets. No hourly add-ons.
Do you backup my server as part of the server management?
Backup is a separate service and we recommend it. See Linux Server Backup.
What Linux distributions do you support?
All major Linux distributions, including AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, RHEL, Ubuntu LTS, and Debian. CentOS 7 reached end-of-life on June 30, 2024 — we’ll help you migrate to a supported distribution.
Can you install a control panel on my Linux server?
Yes, but on a fresh Linux installation only. cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, and Virtualmin all expect to own the system from day one, so adding one to a server we’ve already configured by hand isn’t safe. We can build a new server with your chosen panel and migrate your data over.

Paul Fabulous Support

“Just wanted to give kudos to your team, Thomas in particular. You guys saved us again today with your backup service. He was able to pull a huge database from July and install it so we could access it and extract some vital lost data. You guys have always been great.”

Kevin Backup Investment

“I have been using your services now for over 5 years and am extremely pleased with the relationship that we have established. Just set it and forget it — you provide a much-needed coverage in our gap between what we know, what we don't, and what we just don't know that we don't know…”

Scott Extremely Pleased

“Server Surgeon is awesome! I'm so grateful for your swift responses and help with the server. It's good to feel less of a victim now with a fighting chance against hackers.”

Larry Awesome

“Wow, I am really impressed. The turnaround was great, emails from the admins were clear and the monitoring panel is terrific. It's clear that you have perfected the process. I wish I had called you last week instead of agonizing over how hard finding someone was going to be.”

Carol Monitoring

“It's really nice to be able to concentrate on doing what we do best — web design, development and SEO — rather than spending hours/days on Linux forums hoping to find a fix, when in reality we haven't got a clue how to manage a Linux server to the commercial standard that's required.”

Chong Keeps Us Focused

Why Customers Came to Us

When the Other Linux Server Provider Gave Up

Linux servers go wrong in known ways. A kernel update breaks the boot loader and the box does not come back up. A disk fills the inode table during a runaway log rotation. The OOM killer takes out the wrong process and the database goes down. MySQL pegs the disk because a customer wrote a runaway query. MariaDB replication breaks during a failover. A systemd unit refuses to start after a config change. ModSecurity blocks a legitimate billing API. PHP-FPM workers stay stuck. A database goes corrupt during a write. A drive in the RAID set fails on a Saturday night. The previous Linux server management provider closes the ticket and tells the customer it is their problem.

Every one of those Linux server tickets has been picked up by a senior system administrator here, more times than we can count.

We finish Linux server migrations another firm abandoned mid-rsync. We trace the actual cause when a Linux server has been compromised, and take the steps that prevent it from happening again. We clean up after a kernel or panel update that broke something the previous admin could not put back. We pull data off failing drives when there is no clean Linux server backup of last Tuesday. We track down intermittent issues another vendor wrote off as “just one of those things.”

The web hosting companies that have stayed with us for fifteen and eighteen and twenty years stayed because when something goes wrong on their Linux server, the problem gets fixed.

Try Server Surgeon for Thirty Days

If we are not the right fit, the 30-day money-back guarantee is the easiest check we ever sign. Month-to-month, no fixed-term contract on your Linux server. Most hosting companies stay because they do not get burned again.
